Appointments

All surgeries, including special clinics, are strictly by prior appointment. Appointments can be made in person online or by telephone. Where possible online appointments are made available throughout the week.

THE SURGERY IS NOT A WALK IN CENTRE. ALL APPOINTMENTS MUST BE PRE-BOOKED

For routine appointments you can request to see a particular GP. This may not always be possible and you will be offered an alternative GP. For continuity of care please request to see the same doctor for an ongoing problem or to discuss test results.

You can book routine appointments up to 4 weeks in advance. Our appointment books are automatically extended overnight every Saturday.

A routine appointment is for 10 minutes and patients are seen strictly by time of appointment. There is no advantage in arriving at the surgery 15 or 20 minutes early. When you arrive at the surgery, you must notify the reception staff of your arrival or use the check-in screen situated opposite the reception desk. Please also inform the receptionist if you have problems with your hearing or sight or if you have limited mobility and cannot manage stairs.

Urgent Same Day Appointments

Every morning one of our doctors is ‘on-call’ and as well as seeing patients who request to be seen urgently that morning will be telephoning patients back. This method of telephone triage often means that an ailment can be treated over the phone saving a trip to the surgery. The doctors and nurses routinely contact patients by telephone during the rest of the week and the nurses also offer telephone triage every day. However, if a doctor or nurse feels that you need to be seen at the surgery, you will be offered an appointment. These triage appointments complement our telephone advice service.

If you feel that your ailment could be treated via telephone triage, please let our receptionists know.

We reserve a number of book on the day appointments which are released at 8.00 for morning, afternoon and evening appointments. These routine appointments are given on a strictly ‘first come first served’ basis.

Home visits

If you are too ill to come to the surgery and you require a visit at home, please call the surgery before 10.30. This will help the doctors and nurse practitioners to plan their rounds and avoid any unnecessary delays.

Our receptionists are not clinically trained and cannot assess if a home visit is necessary. Therefore all requests for a home visit will be triaged by a nurse in the first instance who will contact you (or your representative if you are too ill to come to the telephone) to discuss your request. In some cases a doctor or nurse will ring you directly and may be able to provide advice during the call. The doctor or nurse may also prescribe medication and leave a prescription at reception to be collected or send it electronically to your nominated pharmacy, who may be able to deliver the medication? If your condition cannot be dealt with on the telephone and it is clinically necessary, the doctor will visit after morning surgery.

Home visits take up much more of a doctor’s time than a consultation in the surgery, so if you are mobile please come into the surgery to be seen.

Telephone advice

If you require advice from a doctor or nurse over the telephone, the best time to ring is between 8.30 and 09.00 and 13.30 and 14.00 You will be asked to leave your details and a nurse will ring you back after morning or afternoon surgery, whichever is most appropriate for the time of your call. If appropriate the nurse will arrange for you to speak to a doctor or make an appointment for you to attend the surgery.

Missed appointments

If you are unable to keep your appointment for whatever reason, please remember to let us know. Patients who do not attend without telling us put an unnecessary strain on our surgery resources and cancelled appointments can sometimes be offered to other patients.

Patients who fail to attend for their booked appointments may receive a letter explaining our policy on missed appointments. If you miss more than one appointment you may be removed from the practice list.  During April, we had 42 appointments missed – these appointments could have been used by someone urgently needing to see a GP.  Please consider this when you phone to make an appointment and we are unable to offer you one as quickly as you would like.

Extended Access appointments with a nurse or HCA are now available on Wednesday evenings from 18.30 till 20.15.  We hold various clinics including health checks and diabetic clinics.
